What To Ask When Wanting Better Photo Styling Jobs
Jul 21, 2023
I styled an ad campaign where I spent time taking the “pretty stems” out of apples and supergluing them in other apples to make “the perfect apples” for a photo! (It happens!) Don’t be discouraged if the photo and prop styling jobs you are getting are assisting jobs, pressing & ironing, shopping and returning. Sometimes, we don’t get the glamorous jobs, but ask yourself these questions when it happens:
▪️ Did I meet new friends and colleagues with similar creative interests?
▪️ Did I get images and tearsheets for my portfolio and website?
▪️ Did I learn something on the job? (A new tool, a new technique?)
▪️ Did I get hired to do what I love ~ photo styling?
▪️ Did I get an opportunity with this client to start to build a relationship?
This “apple job” 🍏 was for a Fortune 500 Company that paid my full Day Rate and produced a beautiful tearsheet and images for my styling portfolio ~ always think of the positives! (They are always there if you look for them and think about it.) Also, I was hired for this job as the Principal, Lead Stylist. Ya never know what tasks you'll be doing no matter what "level" you are hired at ~ just roll with it!
We learn something from every assignment we do. Every assignment we do gives us an opportunity to hone and work on our craft of styling and make us a better Photo Stylist.
